What is cold-formed steel?
Cold-formed steel — also called light gauge steel framing or LGS — is structural steel that is rolled or press-braked into shape at room temperature from thin galvanized sheet, typically 0.8 mm to 3 mm thick. Unlike hot-rolled sections, cold-formed members stay straight, carry precise dimensions, and never warp on site.
The most common cold-formed steel sections are C-studs and tracks for walls, C- and Z-purlins for roofs and secondary framing, hat-sections for cladding, and lipped channels for trusses. Together they form the structural skeleton of modular buildings, bathroom pods, residential homes, commercial fit-outs, mezzanines, and increasingly mid-rise hotels and student housing.

Cold-formed steel (CFS), also called light gauge steel (LGS) framing, is structural steel that is bent and rolled into shape at room temperature — unlike hot-rolled steel, which is shaped at high temperature. Typical CFS sections are C-studs, tracks, Z-purlins, and hat-sections, usually 0.8 mm to 3 mm thick. CFS vs hot-rolled steel — when do I use each?
Hot-rolled I-beams and H-sections are for heavy load paths — primary portal frames, long spans, heavy industrial buildings.
